From nomadic families to the Gobi Cashmere factory outlet
Mongolia is the second largest provider of cashmere in the world. Cashmere is a thin layer of hair that grows underneath of goats belly. It is also one of the main sources of supply for the Mongolian nomads. Each spring, herders comb the cashmere from the goats which is then bagged and sold to cashmere factories. Raw cashmere is then washed, sorted and dyed in various colours to be woven for final products. This exclusive tour of ours will allow you to see the entire process on one trip. We will fist visit a herder family outside of Ulaanbaatar, followed by a tour at the Gobi Cashmere Factory, the first and largest of its kind in the city.
Day 1 Tuv Province / Ulaanbaatar
In the morning, meet your guide and begin driving to the rural area of Mongolia. Our destination is a nomadic family who raises goats and sheep for their living. We will visit the family and explore their age old traditions. We will then have the opportunity to visit the animals and learn how cashmere is collected. After lunch at the nomadic family, Mongolian style, we will drive back to UB and visit the Gobi Cashmere Factory. Here, we will have a tour through the main production assemblies and learn how cashmere sweaters and other products are made. We will then have a chance to visit the factory outlet for a shopping opportunity. (L)
